"METAPARALLAX", 04 —05.
Related to an on-going research on performative articulations between the ‘sounding light instrument’ and the ‘bodiless instrument’, this site-specific project-series emerged from the previous [‘parallax’] one and expanded its instrumentation through multiple engagements with location and collaborating artists.
• Metaparallax # 6.2, residency w/ open studio, theoretical work presentation and performance-installation at ORT, NYC, USA. Collaboration w/ Hugo Barbosa (video) for sound and video material on-site collection. 3 light sensors for video and 1 for natural light + 4 pressure sensors were programmed for sample processing and wave generation. Final performance started with sunset (ie. disappearing drones). Invited artists: H. Barbosa (video playing sounding light instrument, Port), Aki Onda (tapes and chaospad, Jap/ NY), Margarida Garcia (double bass, Port), Barry Weisblat (prepared guitar and electronics, NY), Aaron and Talibam (turntables and synth, NY). View it
• Metaparallax # 4.7, residency w/ performance-installation. Core-collaboration w/ Hugo Barbosa (video for sounding light instrument). Bairro Alto’s neighborhood was condensed in the showroom: images of local graffitties were projected onto 3 lightsensors for processing a soundscape upon on-site collected sound material. 3 pressure + 1 turn sensor + light percussion were used as punctuators. Artists invited for final performance: Toshio Kajiwara (lapsteel and electronics, Jap/ NY), David Maranha (dobro and harmonium, Port), Manuel Mota (guitar, Port), Ricardo Jacinto (electric bass, Port) and Nuno Torres (sax, Port). ZDB, Lisbon, Portugal View it
• Metaparallax # 3.9, residency w/ workshop and performance-installation. Collaboration w/ Enrike Hurtado (software design and electric guitar, Spain). Enrike’s software sampled/ mixed his guitar while originating kinetic changes in its graphical interface; interface was projected onto 4 sample-processing light sensors. My own moving shadow also affected these sensors, ie. sound behaviour. Arteleku, S. Sebastian, Spain View it
• Metaparallax # 3, performance w/ Portuguese artists Manuel Mota (guitar), Ricardo Jacinto (electric bass) and Nuno Torres (sax) for the ‘electronic music’ cicle organized by ZDB, Lisbon, Portugal. My dislocation while playing the bodiless instrument activated/ processed some audio samples assigned to light sensors (through shadow) and pressure sensors (through feet+hands) View it
• Metaparallax # 2.4, (dis)embodied words, performance for the cicle (dis)embodied words organized by Granular. Samples assigned to light sensors placed behind the bodiless instrument were fragments of some verses by Andrea Martha. Present voices of absent bodies were processed, mixed and re-recombined according to my shadow’s incidence over these sensors. The show followed a score that also included choreographic notations. Invited artist: Margarida Mestre (voice, Port). Cem, Lisbon, Portugal View it
• Metaparallax # 2.2, performance for the aniversary of Serralves Museum. Bodiless instrument, light percussion, sensors (3 light + 2 pressure + turn). M. Mestre’s voice was used as an instrument amongst others, dissolving into the specific sonorities of parallax’ instrumentation. Casa de Srralves, Porto, Portugal View it
• Metaparallax # 1, residency w/ installation and performance at the convent in Torres Vedras. Light sensors placed on windows determined very slow variations in a continuing soundscape. The bodiless instrument was configured as a huge amplified net stretched throughout the space. There were light sensors responding to the audience’s shadow. Audience could play both bodiless instrument and sounding light instrument. Final performance w/ Ricardo Jacinto (electric bass). Invisible Realities - Intermedia Festival, Torres Vedras, Portugal. "PARALLAX", '02 — 03.
Project-series concerned with site-specific explorations regarding the performative possibilities for the 'sounding light instrument'. Architectural conditions, body movement and light variations determined a set of variations in the soundscape, whose range of compositional possibilities was pre-programmed.
• Parallax # 3. 5, performance for the Festival Nouvellum, Toulouse, France (two performances, one solo, the other in collaboration). Setup remained similar to the one of ‘parallax #3’ but the ‘bodiless instrument’ gathered now 3 pairs of amplifyed wires played with the violin bow for the first time. Festival organizers Pierre Jodlowski and Pascal joined me with laptops for the second performance. View it
• Parallax # 3, residency and performance-installation in an active textile mill. Room built with materials found on-site. Contra-light and light refraction versus moving shadows for sample processing. 2 light sensors were placed for reacting to my movement while playing the ‘bodiless instrument’; 2 other ones were affected by light projectors through a mixer. A set of press and turn sensors, light percussion and vocals completed my personal set-up. Performance finished with a raga w/ Olof Arnals (violin, Iceland). Ultrasound Festival, Huddersfield, U.K.. View it
• Parallax # 2. 9, Extendelasticinfinite, performance and DVD recording with sound spatialization system. The ‘bodiless instrument’ extended itself in connection with the ‘tool-necklace’ and the silver seamless performance dress. 2 hand-manipulated light sensors, 1 pressure and 1 turn sensor were used for sample processing ; the ‘light percurssion instrument’ punctuated my voice with beats. T-U-B-E, Muenchen, Germany. View it
• Parallax # 2.1, Lightpeaksoundscape, residency, workshop and performance-installation on June 21st, Summer Solstice. Concept and composition in collaboration with Toshio Kajiwara (lapsteel + electronics, NY). Graphical score. Architectural installation w/ Babeth Coutant (Fra/ Port). 3 more performers: David Maranha (dobro, Port), Manuel Mota (guitar, Port) and Margarida Mestre (voice, Port). Sun was first musician: soundscape started as dominantly controlled by 2 light sensors placed for the sonic transposition of the year's longest day decay. 4 other sensors were placed inside for gesture + artificial light sources. Lugar Comum, Barcarena, Portugal. View it
• Parallax # 2.0.1, # 2.0.2, #2.0.3, portable versions with versatile score, performance-installations based upon multiple interpretations on a graphic score. 6 light sensors determined the soundscape according to the manipulation of artificial light sources and to my body movement. Studio source-material imported and adapted to each specific situation. Margarida Mestre co-interpreted first 2 performances. ZDB Gallery, Lisbon, IFI Festival, Pontevedra, Spain, Videomedija, Novi Sad, Servia. View it
• Parallax # 1, Lightlandsoundscape, instrumental space, installation, workshop and performances at the ACAC — Aomori Contemporary Art Center, Aomori, Japan. 8 light sensors determined the soundscape according to natural light variations and artificial light manipulation. The installation invited for different kinds of playfulness according to weather and daytime; at night it allowed for inter-activity. 8 performances. Guest artists, dancers, composers: Yvette Poorter (Can), Emiko (Jap), Shii Kei (Jap), Soichi Fukushi (Jap), Miho Hirota (Jap), Niran Baibulat (Fin). View it

"PARALLAX DEVIATION", '03,
challenged my parallax investigations through the concept’s engagement within the frame of some wider collaboration projects that were initiated by somebody else. Questioning conceptual-physical boundaries.
• Cosmic Chapel - Parallax Deviation B, Chapel of the Saudação Convent. Root-collaboration with Ricardo Jacinto within the frame of 'Colina', a residency with 21 artist conceived by Rui Horta for creative contamination. My instrumentation and Ricardo's percussive giant mirrors were combined into a 'sacred installation'. Issue: are there any conceptual borders regarding the 'sounding light instrument's visual configuration? 7 light sensors were assigned to natural light, artificial light, body movement and direct manipulation. The bodiless instrument was still just an amplified wire stretched through space; timbre, dynamic and meaning were daily extended through dialogues with Ricardo' s electric bass. Invited performers: Marija Stamenkovic (Esp/ Ser), Celine Bacque (Fra), Clara Andermat (Port). Monte-Mor-O-Novo, Portugal. View it
• Game Plan - Parallax Deviation A, CAM — Calouste Gulbenkian Center for Modern Arts, framed by the "Capitals" presentation series. Collaboration with Ricardo Jacinto, Beatriz Cantinho and Ligia Soares (iniciator of the project). Four art works should de-construct and re-construct their individual identities within a whole. Issue: to which extent can the 'sounding light instrument' assume its omnipresent nature within a collaboration context? The sensors' allocation and calibration was set for reciprocal contamination. 7 sensors reacted to remote-controlled light, body movement, percussion on Ricardo's pendular mirror.
